The city of Orel is the capital of the southwestern Russian province of Oblast. One of the main arteries in the city, Krasnoarmey Street, which is 2.5 km long, was successfully reconstructed using RoadCem. The reconstruction took place in a short space of time and is durable enough to withstand the Russian winters without being damaged.

The city of Orel decided to utilize the new technology for the reconstruction of Krasnoarmey Street because it is very interested in exploring sustainable construction methods as opposed to the traditional methods for the renovation and expansion of its current road network.  The maintenance of the existing network is quite costly, in part due to the short service life of the traditionally constructed structures and the relatively high prices for the traditional materials. Together these issues make the extension of the road network a great budgetary problem. Another important constraint are the short execution times for the road works—they can only be done during the summer months.

By using the product RoadCem from PowerCem Technologies, it is possible to stabilize the materials used in the existing road surface (asphalt and sand) after they have been milled. As a result, none of the existing materials need be removed, costs are reduced (30-70%) and the construction time of the project is substantially shortened (75% shorter). A shorter construction time is always important, certainly along busy traffic arteries through a city. Only 24 hours after stabilization, the road can be used again. By using RoadCem, the in-situ cement stabilization attains a higher degree of stiffness and greater flexibility. This makes the stabilization able to withstand the greatly fluctuating climatic conditions, which in turn increase the service life of the pavement while keeping the maintenance costs down.

After the winter period, with long freezing and thawing cycles at the beginning and end of the winter and temperatures that fell to -40°C, the entire construction was intact and no damage to the roadway (cracks, deformations, …) was found.
